Safety Issues

Associated Dental Care adopts the viewpoints expressed by the Canadian Dental Association and Health Canada on the following topics:

  1. Dental Amalgam
  2. Sterilization
  3. Water Lines
  4. Radiation

Dental Amalgam

In its position on dental amalgam, the Canadian Dental Association notes that amalgam offers clear advantages over other materials in many restorations.

And while amalgam fillings do release tiny amounts of mercury vapour, “current scientific consensus supports the position that amalgam does not contribute to illness.” Still, the CDA notes, amalgam may not be suitable for all patients, particularly those who are sensitive to it or who have allergies to it.

In 1996, Health Canada followed up two years of assessment and consultation by saying that current evidence did not indicate that dental amalgam was causing illness in the general public. It could justify neither a ban nor removing sound existing amalgam fillings.

Health Canada recommended not using dental amalgam with patients “allergic to mercury, those with impaired kidney function, or in contact with existing metal devices, such as braces.” It also recommended that amalgam fillings “not be placed in or removed from the teeth of pregnant women and that alternatives should be considered for use in the primary teeth of children.”

We agree with these stands and a position of the CDA: it makes sense for a patient and Dentist to discuss suitable restoration materials and choose the one that is most appropriate.
